I am board certified and licenced
by the state of Washington.
Looking back, I realize one of the major influencing
factors in my interest about natural medicine had to
do with my older sister, Christy. She is legally blind
and deaf. Growing up with Christy, I was prompted to
think outside the box when it comes to mainstream medicine.
There was never a definitive answer as to what may have
caused Christy's particular challenge. Because there
was no answer, I questioned everything.
After my undergraduate degree, I moved to Colorado.
The culture there in general is very conducive for plant
based, nutrition oriented medicine. I was like a duck in
water. I lived in Boulder for a couple of years, practiced
yoga and learned about natural therapies. I moved to
Telluride for the last two years in Colorado. I worked
as a ski instructor and a real estate appraiser. Life was
very good, however I was ready to continue my education.
I went to the library in Boulder and found a doctorate
program in Naturopathy. It was perfect for me. I fulfilled
the necessary requirements for Bastyr University and the
rest is history.
My basic philosophy is our bodies have inherent intelligence
that we as humans will never completely understand or replicate. Our emergency medicine in the United States is the finest
available in the world, however, our world rank for overall
health is very poor and yet we spend more money on it by far
than any other country. This discrepancy is in part due to
manipulation of our foods and their nutritional content,
the environment we live in, and the disruption of the natural healing process with, at times, unnecessary medical interventions.
There are distinct and definite advantages with progress
as a whole, however, it is well know that there will be
individuals who will suffer from it. There is a greater
awareness that we should focus on quality as much as quantity.
Naturopathy and the related professions are a vehicle that
allow for an increase in quality that is essential to all
of our well being. I, Dr Kimberly Wiseman, thank Bastyr
University for the opportunity it has given me and the
education I received.
