Basic Exercise Rountine To Promote Health.

This is a very informal description of how I council my patients as a Naturopathic Physician on their exercise goals.

I recommend 30 minutes 3-5 times a week.

Your heart rate should get high enough where you are slightly breathless, however you could still carry on a conversation.

Try to maintain that elevated heart rate for 20 minutes.

Stretching is so very important. This will balance the stress on the muscle created from weight training and also activity in general.

I used to do yoga on a regular basis. I don't currently do it as often as I should, which is not a good example for a Naturopathic Physician, however I think it is the best way to maintain flexibility.

Your body is like a flexible tree in the wind, it will bend instead of snapping in two. A tree grows in the direction of it's daily movements. For example, if it is all bent over, it will grow crooked. We want our bodies to be tall and straight. Stretching helps us maintain good posture and balance.

Weight lifting is also important. Having and maintaining muscle mass is so important for our health. It increases our metabolism, helps our balance, and keeps our bones strong.

Jarring activities are also good to increase bone density. This includes activities like jumping jacks, jumping rope, jogging, etc. Please see the page on obesity for more information on body mass index.
